SUN DELIVERS JAVA(TM) PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS XP

Sun Invites Internet Community to Preview Java Virtual Machine for the

Browser

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- November 5, 2001 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced

that the early access version of its Java(TM) plug-in for Windows XP is

available for free download today from the company's Web site at

http://java.sun.com/getjava. This Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Windows XP

supports Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers on all versions of

Windows. This early access technology will give Web publishers, developers,

and enthusiasts an opportunity to preview the latest support for dynamic,

interactive Java applications on the Internet.

"We're committed to delivering the best interactive user experience on the

Web through Java technology," said Rich Green, vice president and general

manager, Java and XML Software at Sun Microsystems. "The Java platform has

achieved incomparable success in the software industry as a fundamental

foundation for end-to-end cross-platform architecture for everything from

the enterprise to mobile phones. Sun continues to build on this success by

delivering cutting-edge support for Java technology for the Windows

desktop."

Sun's Java plug-in will offer a rich user interface, advanced image

rendering, multimedia and animation support, enhanced performance,

internationalization capabilities, and other features that provide an

impressive user experience. Many leading companies already offer Web-based

Java applications for such critical services as financial planning and

analysis, collaboration, and multi-media. In addition, tens of millions of

registered Internet users spend millions of hours playing Java

technology-based games every month.

Many personal computer manufacturers currently ship Java technology with

their products. Sun will work with these original equipment manufacturers

to update their products. The Java plug-in is compatible with browsers on

all versions of Windows, including Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows,

versions 5.5 SP2 and 6.0, and with Netscape, version 6.0 and higher.

Installation of the early access version of Sun's Java plug-in is

recommended for developers, IT professionals, advanced computer users, and

enthusiasts. Technical support will not be widely available for this early

access version.
