Test: NETGEAR Orbi Tri-Band Mesh WiFi Router AC2200

Konklusion

Efter at have kørt med Orbi i en uges tid, sidder jeg tilbage med et positivt indtryk. Som nævnt tidligere er opsætningen noget af det nemmeste jeg har prøvet til dato, det nemt og lige til.
I testperioden, har mine normale Access Points samt firewall været slukket helt for hermed bedre at få en fornemmelse af stabiliteten af det trådløse link imellem router og trådløse klienter.
Jeg har ikke oplevet udfald på trådløse klienter, eller ved roaming fra stuen hvor Orbi routeren er placeret eller når jeg har bevæget mig op på min 1.sal (satellitenheden) det har i hele perioden kørt gnidningsfrit.

På kassen til Orbi AC2200, står der at den dækker op til 250m2 dette passer muligvis meget godt, har ikke oplevet nogle problemer med dækningen af mit lille rækkehus på 108m2.
Købes Orbi sættet, er det en god ide at placere selve routeren så centralt i ens lejlighed/hus etc. Da tilsluttet satellitter kommunikerer direkte med routeren, uden om de andre satellitter.
For at svare på mit eget spørgsmål, ”hvordan performer sådan en løsning mod et par almindelige Access points” må svaret været at forskellen imellem dedikeret Access Points og Orbi løsningen er mindre end jeg havde regnet med. Kan sagtens se nogle situationer, hvor jeg ville anbefale Orbi i stedet for et eller flere dedikeret Access Points da det egentligt blot spiller maks ud af kassen.

Orbi AC2200 er en tri-band router, som betyder at den trådløse (FastLane3) forbindelse imellem router og satellitenheden ikke påvirkes af kommunikationen på 2.4 samt 5GHz båndet, da de hver især har sin egen kanal. Deler vi AC2200 ud i tre bider, så er hastigheden på FastLane3 forbindelsen på 866Mbps, og det samme er gældende for 5GHz for klienterne, hvor vi på 2,4Ghz må nøjes med 400Mbps.

Bundle/Tilbehør- 3
Der er alt i pakken med fra NETGEAR, som skal bruges for at kunne tilslutte Orbi hverken mere eller mindre. For min skyld, kunne de godt have sparet CD-ROMmen væk og vedlagt et ekstra Ethernet kabel i stedet for.

Design/Layout - 5
Designet er som altid en smagssag, men jeg personligt kan rigtigt godt lide det.
Vi rammer derfor et flot 5 tal.

Software - 4
Har man tidligere haft et NETGEAR produkt i huset, vil man hurtig føle sig hjemme i menuerne.
Orbi kommer også med deres forældrekontrol, som findes i en gratis samt en betalende udgave.
En ting jeg undret mig over efter opsætningen af Orbi, er at funktionerne ”Enable Implicit BEAMFORMING - Boosts WiFi speed, reliability, & range for all mobile devices” samt  ”Enable MU-MIMO” ikke er slået til som standard, som netop skulle gøre ens WIFI oplevelse endnu bedre.  Vil man udvide sit netværk, med en ekstra Orbi satellitenhed for bedre dækning er denne utrolig nem at tilføje i menuen.

Ydelse - 3
Ser vi på ydelsen fra WAN til LAN må jeg indrømme at Orbi skuffer mig, med den opnåede hastighed på 570Mbps. Dette især taget i betragtning af at Orbi er udstyret med relativt ”kraftigt” hardware sammenlignet med andre produkter, som har formået at opnå højere hastighed med mindre hardware. Ydelsen af den trådløse forbindelse samt roaming, har som nævnt kørt problemfrit uden udfald på hverken bærbare, iPhones eller Samsung mobiltelefoner eller andre enheder.
Orbi er som det kunne læses i testen (trådløst) lidt bagefter på ydelsen, sammenlignet med de andre men næppe noget man ville mærke i det daglige. Jeg har ikke fået nogen klager, fra mine teenagere i huset, som ellers er de første til at opdage, hvis der er bøvl med det trådløse netværk. Så absolut godkendt herfra. 

Pris - 3
Orbi AC2200 har en vejledende udsalgspris på 2099,- i skrivende stund.
For prisen får man et system som er let at administrer, nemt at udvide med flere satellitter for bedre dækning i huset. Til prisen og ikke mindst hardwaren i Orbi, havde jeg en klar forventning af maksimal hastighed på den trådløse del samt WAN delen, som ikke helt blev indfriet.

UK summary

After running with Orbi in a week's time, I sit back with a positive impression. As mentioned earlier, setup is one of the easiest things I have tried to date, easy and straightforward. In the test period, my normal Access Points and firewall have been turned off to get a sense of the wireless link between router and wireless clients. I have not experienced any outages on wireless clients, or when roaming from the living room where the Orbi router is located or when I have moved me up on my 1st floor (orbiter) where it has been running smoothly during the entire period.

On the box of the Orbi AC2200, it says it covers up to 250m2 this may fit very well, have not experienced any problems with the coverage of my little townhouse of 108m2.
Purchased the Orbi kit, it is a good idea to place the router so centrally in one's apartment / house etc. Since connected satellites communicate directly with the router without the other satellites.
To answer my own question, "How does such a solution work against a few common Access Points," the answer has been that the difference between dedicated Access Points and Orbi solution is less than I had expected. Can easily see some situations where I would recommend Orbi instead of one or more dedicated access points when it really just playing max out of the box.

The Orbi AC2200 is a tri-band router, which means that the wireless (FastLane3) connection between the router and satellite device is not affected by the 2.4 and 5GHz band communications, as each has its own channel. If we divide the AC2200 into three bits, then the speed of the FastLane3 connection is 866Mbps, and the same is true for 5GHz for the clients, where we at 2.4Ghz can only 400Mbps.

Bundle/Accessories - 3
There is everything in the package with NETGEAR, which will be used to connect Orbi neither more nor less. For my sake, they could have saved the CD-ROM and attached an additional Ethernet cable instead.

Design/Layout - 5
The design is as always a matter of taste, but I personally really like it. We therefore hit a nice grade of 5.

Software/BIOS - 4
If you have previously had a NETGEAR product in the house, you will soon feel at home in the menus. Orbi also comes with their parental control, which is available in a free and a paying version. One thing I wondered about after setting up Orbi is that the features "Enable Implicit BEAMFORMING - Boost's WiFi Speed, Reliability, & Range for All Mobile Devices" and "Enable MU-MIMO" are not enabled by default, which should just do one's WIFI experience even better. If you want to expand your network, with an extra Orbi satellite device for better coverage, this is incredibly easy to add to the menu.

Performance - 3
Looking at the performance from WAN to LAN, I must admit that Orbi is disappointing with the achieved speed of 570Mbps. This in particular took into account that Orbi is equipped with relatively "powerful" hardware compared to other products that have managed to achieve faster speed with less hardware. As mentioned above, the performance of the wireless connection and roaming has run smoothly without any dropouts on portable, iPhones, or Samsung mobile phones or other devices.
Orbi is as it could be read in the test (wireless) slightly afterwards on performance, compared to the others but hardly anything that would be felt in the daily. I have not received any complaints from my teenagers in the house, which are otherwise the first to discover if there is a mess with the wireless network. So absolutely approved from here.

Price - 3
The Orbi AC2200 has an indicative retail price of DKK 2099.- at the time of writing. For the price you get a system that is easy to manage, easy to expand with more satellites for better coverage in the house. For the price and not least the hardware in Orbi, I had a clear expectation of maximum speed on the wireless part as well as the WAN part, which was not fully met.
