2K Games has announced they'll be getting yet more mileage out of their acclaimed 2005 strategy game, Civilization IV, with a new expansion titled Civilization IV: Colonization. But then, this is more than average expansion pack -- as the name implies, Civilization IV: Colonization uses the Civ IV game engine to completely recreate and overhaul the original Sid Meier's Colonization, a turn-based strategy game released in 1994.
"We've received many requests from fans over the years to bring back Colonization and now seemed to be the perfect time to do that," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "The Civilization IV engine provided a fantastic foundation for a new Colonization experience and allowed us to create something great for both new players and long-time fans of the game."
Colonization will put players in the role of one of four European powers, as they guide them from their motherland to the New World, where they'll negotiate, trade, and fight with both natives and competing countries for control. The game will be a complete conversion of Civilization IV, adding new graphics and features, including a new interface, improved diplomacy options, and modding tools that should ensure a steady stream of new community-created content.
The game is set for release this fall, under the auspices of Microsoft's Games for Windows branding.
4# Whaaat!
