Hey.
In the preperation process for my newly bought DS1813+, I'm in the process of clearing a stack of mechanical drives, and started to wonder how many possibilities I have.
I have the following drives:
1 x 1TB WD Pasport (2.5" x 1/4" drive inside)
1 x 1TB Seagate GoFlex (2.5" x 1/4" drive inside)
1 x 1TB Toshiba MQ01ABD100 (2.5" x 1/8")
2 x 500GB Hiatchi 7K500
1 x 640GB WD6400AAKS (From an old WD External HDD)
1 x 500GB "unknown" inside an old Buffalo External hdd.
I need one of the two ultra portable hdd's for my work, but the remaining is available for the NAS.
Have approximately 1.5TB of data that need to be stored, untill the NAS is ready for service, so expected to use the 640GB external and my work drive for "temporary storrage".
Then my questions:
Is it possible to create a single arrey in the following way:
A)
3 x 500GB RAID5 = 1TB = arrey 1 (Thi one is no problem, I know)
But i it the possible to combine the 2 x 1TB HDD + arey 1 in to a RAID 5 arrey = 2TB RAID 5 (55) = arrey 2?
Then later on buying new discs, most likely 3 x 4TB RAID5 = 10TB = Arrey 3 (parallel to arrey 2)
Emptying arrey 2 (and 1) to free drivebays for extra discs to arey 3.
B)
Is there a limmit on the maximum number of arreys, and how "deep" they can be "stacked"?
I.E. 4 x RAID 0, put in to 2 x RAID 0, put in to one RAID 1 arrey? (Theoretically)
C)
Is it limmited to 4TB drives, or is it possible, when they arrive, to put drives with higher capacity in it?
D) It is possible to migrate extra discs in to the RAID 5 arrey, live, without having to clear the data? (Sorry, Too lazy to read all materil I have recieved 😎 )
Thanx i advance for your help.
Edit: spelling errors.
