Konklusion
UK summary
So we came to a conclusion. It has been a good experience with QNAP TS 219P II and although it takes some time to understand and set up the NAS, it has been a pleasure to learn about "NAS" technology. To emphasize my approach to this task, I had only tried to mess with an external HDD as the only external storage media, and I knew absolutely nothing about iSCSI or user administration. But I did learn alot eventually, and QNAP made the process very easy. Performance is pretty good but I think that my 2x WD Green drives are the bottleneck for the potential speed of the NAS. If you throw faster harddrives in the NAS, the speed will most likely increase.
Innovation/Technology - 4
With a Marvell 2.0GHz CPU, we are in the top of the single core performance, yet it is still a single core and not dual as seen in Intel's Atom series. The support for iSCSI, and hot swap is really delicious and the NAS has many features. USB 3.0 and dual LAN would have given 5 points, but they are features which are nice to have and not need to have.
Bundle/Accessories - 3
The bundle is good, slightly more than expected due to the extra screws. But nothing wild and extraordinary.
Design/Layout - 4
I am pleased with the design of this device, however I think that the box could have been made of a better material. Metal is always a nice thing, but the hard plastic still function as a beatiful exterior and provide the necessary solid structure. The opening and closing mechanism is a little too fragile and could be made of metal, but otherwise the placement of buttons, USB connector and HDD bays are good.
Software/BIOS - 4
We looked at something remarkable in the introduction of QNAP, and that was their contribution in making something out of their social community and to make their products very user friendly. It must be acknowledged that they have had great success with this, and I every problem I bumped in to, was quickly solved, due to their built-in help function and easy to read manual. The many features and options allow almost a infinite number of solutions in the form of iSCSI, myCloudNAS etc. It is nice that the packaging of these features offers a good degree of usability.
Performance - 4
Performance varies somewhat among the benchmark used, but the synthetic performance does not always keep up in the real world. The common usage test showed us around 60 MB/s, which is really nice for a 2.0GHz single-core Marvell CPU. I have a tendency to ignore the benchmark and look at the user experience and in my view this is more than accepted. If there was a Blue or Black harddisk from the same manufacturer (WD) in the NAS, we would propably see higher transfer speeds.
Price - 4
The price is around the DKK 2600, - excluding harddrives and this is believed to be fair, compared with other types of NAS with some of the same features. You can probably build a cheaper home made NAS server with open source Linux NAS software that incorporates many of features seen here, but if you want a good out of the box experience, the QNAP TS 219P II is a good choice.
