AM2 vs. AM3

Almost as soon as our test-sample, the X3 720 from AMD came in through the door, an email arrived, explaining that there had been found errors in every BIOS written for the respective AM3 mainboards that AMD has had their fingers in. They're working off their butts in order to develope a BIOS that can support the new CPU's properly, and on that background, they actually proposed to us that we should test the processor in an AM2 board - which is actually quite relevant for many people, who sit around with already purchased AM2 boards with the thought of upgrading, while it is uninteresting for those wanting a Phenom II with DDR3 memory. That's why we're still going to put the AM3 CPU into an AM3 mainboard, so that those who want to buy an AM3 mainboard right away, will know what to expect performancewise, until a new BIOS gets finished.

The big difference in performance that some of us might have hoped for isn't really clearly to be seen, but we mustn't understate the fact that this could be due to the BIOS, that hasn't yet had its bugs fixed and been finished. The differences worth noticing, lies especially in Everest, which is a pure memory benchmark, and in Crysis where the minimum framerate has had a notch upwards. The bigger differences still remain to be seen in this test.
